Town Of Marion Wins Prestigious Achievement Award From Virginia Municipal League!

Ribbon The Town of Marion was honored as one of seven localities to win a prestigious achievement award from the Virginia Municipal League (VML) at the League's Annual Conference in Norfolk on October 20th - 22nd. Seventy eight applications were submitted for consideration for the awards from all corners of the Commonwealth. The town won the award for addressing two of its most pressing problems - a vital east-west connector street and planning for a new housing development, making innovative use of the Public - Private Transportation Act of 1995.
Using the Public - Private Transportation Act of 1995, the Town of Marion was able to negotiate with W&L for the construction of the 2,270 foot Callan Drive at cost, thus saving the taxpayers thousands of dollars. As for W&L's part, the Callan Drive connector street will allow them to construct the rest of the feeder streets for their proposed 107 lot subdivision.
The September 2002 "Virginia Town and City" Magazine stated "The VML Achievement Awards program has a distinguished history as the most prestigious local government awards program in the state, attracting more entries than any other completion....... The league continues to encourage local governments in Virginia to submit to regular, rigorous self-examination of how the delivery of services to citizens can be improved."
The Town of Marion won the award for localities' with population from 5,000 to 10,000. The VML used the following criteria in bestowing to the Town of Marion the achievement award: "Possessing ideas and approaches that make a program relevant to other local governments, and; significantly improving an existing program." The VML judges further stated that the Town of Marion's "project involved several important issues, including community development, transportation and public safety. It also proves that good common sense and a willingness for the private and public sectors to work together in a non-adversarial manner for their mutual benefit can serve the best interests of all concerned. The project's overall fiscal and quality of life impacts to the town and its citizens should be significant."
Other award winners were: City of Norton (population under 5,000), Town of Herndon (population 10,001 to 35,000), City of Manassas (population 35,001 to 90,000), Prince William County (population 90,000 plus). The City of Portsmouth won the President's award and the City of Virginia Beach the Communications Award.
