To vote in Town, County, State, or Federal elections, you must be a U. S. Citizen,
at least 18 years old, mentally sound and not under conviction of a felony.
To register to vote or transfer your registration from one jurisdiction to another,
contact the Voter Registrar in the Morrison Building at 121 Bagley Circle
(on Hospital Hill), Marion, Virginia.

Redistricting takes place statewide every ten years when the Federal Census is completed.
Redistricting mandated by the Virginia Legislature was put into effect early in 2001, and
resulted in the moving of the 39th Senatorial district from Southwest Virginia to Northern
Virginia. The Saltville and Rich Valley precincts were placed in the 38th Senatorial District,
currently served by Senator Phillip P. Puckett of Tazewell, Va. The rest of the precincts in
Smyth County were placed in the 40th District, which is served by Senator William C.
Wampler, Jr. of Bristol, Va.
For the House of Delegates, the redistricting moved the Saltville, Chilhowie, St.Clair,
and Konnarock precincts to the 4th District which is served by Representative Joseph P. Johnson,
Jr. of Abingdon, Va. The rest of the precincts in Smyth County were placed in the 5th District,
served by Representative Charles W. "Bill" Carrico of Independence, Va.
WHERE DO I GO TO VOTE?
TOWN OF MARION ELECTIONS: The Town of Marion is served by a Mayor and Seven Councilmen
who are elected to 4-year staggered terms at elections that are held the first Tuesday in May.
The Mayor and three Councilmen are elected one year, and the other four Councilmen are elected
two years later. In a Town election all of the citizens of Marion vote at the same voting precinct
which is located in the W. W. Scott Senior Citizen Center at 307 South Park Street. Polls are open
on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
SMYTH COUNTY, STATE AND FEDERAL ELECTIONS: There are 15 precincts in 7 voting Districts in
Smyth County. Four of the voting precincts, Wassona, Royal Oak East, West Park, and East Park
each contain a part of the Town of Marion. Polls are open on Election day (which is normally the
first Tuesday in November) from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. If you live in the precinct listed below,
you will vote at the indicated polling place:
Absentee Precinct: absentee ballots are counted at the precinct located in
the Morrison Building located on Hospital Hill.
ATKINS DISTRICT:
Atkins Precinct votes at the Atkins Elementary School.
Wassona Precinct votes at the Marion Senior High School
located at 848 Stage Street.
CHILHOWIE DISTRICT:
