MARION PARTNERS TO EXPAND AWARD-WINNING “POP UP” PROGRAM TO INCLUDE NEW AND EXPANDING BUSINESSES

The Town of Marion, in partnership with Virginia's new Community Business Launch program through the Department of Housing and Community and Development, will offer a new twist on their award-winning "Pop Up Marion" Entrepreneur Development program for the next class.  This round is not only open to prospective new businesses, but also to existing businesses in Marion wanting to expand.  And instead of $5,000, successful applicants can win up to $20,000 each!

"We are delighted that Governor McAuliffe sees our program as a good, solid investment," said Marion mayor David Helms.  "Our program has been so successful, and we're so proud to showcase our community and share our information with towns and cities for them to use to rebuild their economic base.  This gives us the opportunity to not only help grow new businesses, but also provide assistance to our long-term businesses that want to grow."

Everyone is welcome in the class, from those exploring ideas to seasoned business owners.  The five week class explores every facet of small business ownership, helps provide the information to develop a business plan, provides the opportunity to pitch ideas, and introduces them to fellow entrepreneurs for networking opportunities.  Winning participants will be eligible for up to $20,000 in grant funds. New startups must fill a vacant storefront.  Existing businesses must expand their offerings.  ALL GRANTEES MUST CREATE A MINIMUM OF 1 FULL TIME AND 1 PART TIME JOB, and be located in the Town of Marion.

All grant monies are reimbursable.  For startups, up to $5,000 is reimbursable for up to six months' rent or mortgage and business utilities.  Startups and expansions are also eligible for a total of $20,000 in reimbursable grant funds for business operations - renovations, signage, equipment, merchandise, etc.   Each grantee must complete a business plan, fill a vacant storefront or provide significant expansion to an existing business, fill a community need, and provide a minimum of one full time and one part time job per grant.  Preference will be made to retail and hospitality businesses, but the classes are open to everyone.  All businesses will be required to open or expand within properly zoned locations in the Town of Marion.

Pop UP Marion classes are Tuesday nights in March, 6:00pm at The Henderson.  Due to demand, advance registration is STRONGLY encouraged.  Email Samantha White swhite@marionva.org or call  378-5029 to reserve a seat at the March session.
