The Smyth County Historical and Museum Society, Inc., through the dedication and determination of Mrs. Clara Hill Carner, began in 1961 with the mission to "preserve and protect Smyth County’s history through the collection, protection, display, and interpretation of artifacts and outreach programs".
The Smyth County Museum began in an 1838 one-room school house that was located below the Marion Primary School, just east of the athletic parking lot of Marion Senior High School.
Now the Museum is located in another school building which was erected in 1908. This building has served as a high school, grammar school, school board offices, library and now served the county as our Museum. The rich cultural heritage of generations reverberates through these hollowed halls. Some of the exhibits include, Country Store, Sherwood Anderson, Raiload, Salt Works, Southwestern State Hospital, and Times of Crisis to name a few.
